MAD about LUCITE… a Designer Essential

Lucite Living With Lucite1

A Designer essential for nearly a century, LUCITE (otherwise known as the synthetic polymer of Polymethyl methacrylate) is a transparent thermoplastic, often used as a light or shatter-resistant alternative to glass and formed into the most glamourous and sexy of home furnishings and Designer accessories. The material was developed in 1928 in various laboratories, and was first brought to market in 1933 by Rohm and Haas Company.  The magic of Lucite is its visual delicacy combined with its amazing strength and ability to be fashioned into any item or shape.  However, the real allure lays in its glowing sparkle it adds to every room, visually expanding your space.  Unlike acrylic or plastic, Lucite has a diamond clarity that literally reflects light like a prism as well as a certain inner glow that gives a visual magic to each piece and your room.  You can ALWAYS tell the difference between Lucite and an inexpensive knockoff, it is one of those things that can’t be faked by a lesser material.  As you can see from the images, the beauty, glamour and chicness of Lucite knows no bounds and is one of the quickest Design solutions to add a fresh spin on a room (it modernizes a traditional room elevating its style and freshness and adds humour and wit to a modern space), the reason for this lays in the fact that while it is a simple material, it’s capable of adding a strong dose of airiness and sophistication to any room through its bold presence and crystal clarity.  Some of the BEST and most stunning items currently available in Lucite include:

The George II Chair
A delicious combination of traditional form but using the futuristic material…this chair has a wonderful sexiness and conceptual wit that would be a stunning addition to any room.  I would LOVE to see a large old harvest table encircled with these chairs, or a sexy round pedastal table in a library.

The Clearly Classic Tangier Table
Witty and with a strong sense of style, the classic Tangier table alludes to the mystery and allure of Morocco yet in a bold, fresh and sexy modern take.  I would love to see a pair of this flank a clean lined modern sofa with sumptious boldy coloured cushions so that you get the essence of the historical reference the design carries.  I envision it with either lucite or mouth blown glass lamps…. it would as well make for a sexy bed side table.

Mercer Bench
A beautiful fusion of classic, rich detailing and style with a modern, sexy and fresh take.  The legs elevate the design here to be unexpected, visually alluring and again adds that sense of conceptual delight.  I would love to see this used at a modern blocky dining table with a glass top or reclaimed wood top  or at the end of a chunky leather bed to add some sparkle.

Madeline Coffee Table
A TRUE Design statement… BOLD, SEXY, MODERN and yet with a retro elegance and allure.  I LOVE this piece made by the brilliant Todd Hase.  The visual strength and clean, fresh lines of this piece guarantee that it will work in any and every style of room from Modern to Traditional.  It is because lucite has this futuristic and yet at the same time retro visual and conceptual look that makes the pieces so easily workable.  The beauty of this coffee table lays in its wonderful proportions married to the peekabo sexiness of the legs and stretcher with the bold masculine top.  A design classic.

Aaron R. Thomas Lounge Chair
A wonderful classic that is both blazingly modern and yet embracingly retro at the same time.  This Lounge Chair is elegant, refined and would make a beautiful addition to any living room or library/study.  I see it with a gorgeous fur or boldy coloured silk cushion.  A pair flanking a console or as additonal seating would add vitality and intelligence to a space.

The Brilliant Console
STUNNING… BOLD… SEXY… a true Design statement, the Brilliant Console by the illustrious Alexandra von Furstenberg would make a spectacular addition to any room that has the space to allow this piece to breath properly.  While its size is perfect for small spaces to large…you will want to situate it so that it has a clear sight line.  It would make a spectacular addition to any high design environment.

Helena Rubenstein Chair
A Designer classic with a rich history and storied past…the Helena Rubenstein chair is the synthesis of the best and most magical qualities of lucite.  Its sumptous, sexy lines and tradtional character are beautifully married to its futuristic and almost 60’s space age sensibility.  From occassional chair, dining chair, desk chair…or a chair to hold court to your suitors…this is the one.
