The RESTORATION HARDWARE 2012 OUTDOOR FURNITURE Collection
For some, Winter is a magical time of the year… (a heavy emphasis on the word SOME). Words like “winter wonderland” and “let it snow” may be a natural part of your vocabulary. For others, Winter is spent fantasizing about Summer. Our mind explodes with images of pool parties, cottage life, watersports, beaches, bright clear colours, outdoor entertaining, blooming flowers, BBQ’s and suntans. Most of January and February is spent ticking off the days until Victoria Day! In Canada and the Northern US states, there are at least four months out of year – that’s one-third of the time – spent in a winter chill. What a better way to pass the time than by planning your Garden Design for the much anticipated summer patio renovations!

One of my favourite Design retail companies – as you may know – is Restoration Hardware. The company is known for their grand and elegant statement pieces that help to define your space. I’ve written about several of their products, including the amazing Vintage Bird Cage Chandelier… a crystal chandelier that is encased in an antiqued bird cage and elevated by a thick, nautical-style rope. But Restoration Hardware also creates some fabulous outdoor pieces and when you’re looking for outdoor furniture, you need one big focal piece. Restoration Hardware is my first stop-to-shop because they create some of the most amazing outdoor furnishings that will make your guests drool into their apple martinis.
Say goodbye to those fold up picnic chairs (and do NOT get me started on those hideous white plastic chairs!) Those pieces, although affordable, are often very uncomfortable, poor quality and NO Design sensibility. When choosing outdoor furniture, remember that outdoor furniture can be soft, comfortable and luxurious. Most of all, it should be inviting and embracing, as if you’ve g0ne on vacation.
The Restoration Hardware ANTIGUA Collection…warm, inviting and sexy
Perhaps my favourite Restoration Hardware outdoor piece is the Spartan Daybed. (I have always deeply loved the idea of a daybed outdoors!) The canopy is an awesome feature because it offers filtered protection from the sun’s harmful rays. The piece is hand-woven of durable wicker that can last all-weather and is made around a rustproof aluminum frame. The daybed is also propped up on stainless steel feet so it won’t scratch or tear on hard surfaces. I love the sensual lines and organic form of the piece that has an enticing “come hither” sensibility. Did I mention that the outdoor cushion swatches for the bed are available in a staggering 35 colour options!? (Including an essential Hot Pink that would be a spectacular pop in a lush green setting or poolside)… With so many colour choices, it’s hard to decide!
If anything, wicker is as popular as ever for outdoor use because it is such a good match for the natural surroundings of the outdoors. Restoration Hardware’s Mediterranean inspired Majorca chaise is made from hand woven all-weather wicker strands on a rust-proof aluminum frame. The chaise has a weathered brown finish, and has a deep seat with track arms. The poly-filled seat and back cushions are covered in a variety of Perennials or Sunbrella fabrics. What’s also great about this piece is that the cushions are sold separately – so you can mix-and-match (shown in the photograph in sand Perennials Textured Linen Weave).
Old Hollywood Glam…the Majorca Lounger
Restoration Hardware also offers smaller items like pillows and cushions that can be used to spruce up your already existing outdoor space. Vintage 1968 postmarks from Antibes, Nice, St. Tropez and Cannes, give these lumbar pillow covers a touch of France’s Côte d’Azur. However, the real star here is the stain and fade resistant fabric from Perennials!
Restoration Hardware launched an exclusive line of outdoor fabrics by Perennials which makes outdoor and indoor fabrics, previously available “To the Trade” alone. This is the first time Perennials is making its fabrics available directly to the consumer, and are made from solution-dyed acrylic.

Another Restoration Hardware exterior element that I’m raving about are the Laguna Concrete Propane Fire Tables. They are made from heat-resistant fiber-cast concrete. Shown here in a Weathered Slate colour, you can also purchase it in a Sand finish. Tempered glass panels protect the frame (which is also adjustable). The receptacle is filled with lava rock and the fire table uses propane. Also, in case you’re wondering, it’s also CSA-approved for product safety. Also seen in the image are Laguna Concrete Fire Columns, which run on gel fuel and are safe to use indoors or outdoors. These concrete fire columns come in different heights and diameters and are great for use as accents or in smaller outdoor spaces.
Restoration Hardware offers and endless array of options that will surely meet your budget, and if you can’t afford one of the bigger pieces, many of their smaller pieces work well together. These outdoor options are perfect for anyone who wants to start out Summer 2012 with a splash.
Hopefully these sexy and sleek outdoor furniture pieces from Restoration Hardware have helped warm you up! Here are a few more of my favourite things:
